Ritkheyu was 25 when Stories From Chukotka was published. His work evolved over the many years, at first quite appreciative of the benefits the USSR brought to his remote community and later more cognizant of the risks and losses to culture. He was a prolific writer and translator and only a few of his works were translated into English. Taken together or bit by bit, his works offer important perspectives for Alaskans seeking to understand the collision between traditional cultures, modern political and educational structures, and technology.
